Catholic University Athletic Facilities
DuFour Center
The DuFour Center serves as the hub of athletic activity on
campus. The red brick, 144,000 square foot building opened in 1985
and is used for athletic and recreational activities including
varsity sports, intramurals, dance and fitness.
Located across Taylor Road from the main campus, the facility includes: a 2,000 seat main arena home to CUA's basketball and volleyball teams; six lane, 25-yard competition pool with separate warm-down pool and moveable bulkhead; weight room; athletic training room; two fully equipped locker rooms with saunas; two batting cages; three racquetball/handball courts; indoor track; meeting rooms; CUA Athletics Hall of Fame room, dance studio; and office for athletic department personnel. The building also features a multi-sport backcourt which is used for volleyball tournaments, intramurals and varsity practices when inclement weather prevents outside sessions.
Catholic University is indebted to the DuFour Center's benefactors. Deepest gratitude goes to alumnus and former football player Raymond A. DuFour, '28.
Cardinal Stadium
Cardinal Stadium was converted from a natural grass
stadium to a state-of-the-art synthetic FieldTurf surface in 2006.
The complex, which seats 3,500, includes a six-lane track
resurfaced at the same time, bleachers, press box and
scoreboard. The stadium is home to the Cardinal football,
field hockey, lacrosse and track and field teams. In the
summer of 2007 the department installed a new Daktronics scoreboard
to improve the fan experience. The stadium has also played
host to numerous outside events including high school
championships, CUA summer camps and the Special Olympics D.C.
Summer Games.
Robert J. Talbot Baseball Field
Dedicated in 2000, Talbot Field is home to CUA's baseball
team. Renovations in the spring of 2007 included new stadium
seating, a state-of-the-art press box, fencing with a windscreen
and a warning track as well as infield improvements. The field was
named in honor of alumnus and hall of fame mem
ber Robert J. Talbot, '60, who wore many hats at CUA including
those of baseball coach, dean of admissions and financial aid,
athletic director, and most recently, senior gift officer in the
office of development.
Softball Field
The CUA softball facility was completely renovated in
2007. Additions include brick dugouts, a seating structure,
permanent fencing with windscreen, a warning track and foul
poles.
CUA Soccer Field
Home to the CUA soccer teams, the upper fields are
surrounded by trees providing a great viewing atmosphere for
Cardinal fans. A Patriot Bermuda grass surface was added in the
spring of 2007 and the fields are equipped with an in-ground
irrigation system. Bleacher seating is available and both
fields have electronic scoreboards.
DuFour Center Gymnasium
The DuFour Center Gymnasium floor has a new look to it
after getting resurfaced in the summer of 2007. The new floor
will complement the renovations to the lobby, new scorer's table
and updated banners. It will also feature the new athletics
marks. The gymnasium has played host to NCAA tournament
games, the Harlem Globetrotters, ESPN and 20/20. The gym is
not only home to the Cardinal basketball and volleyball squads but
is also the hub of activities for summer AAU basketball tournaments
and the CUA intramural programs.
Pool
The DuFour Center's natatorium boasts a six-lane pool and
automated timing system for all Cardinal swim meets.
Students, faculty and staff can also use the pool during scheduled
hours for recreation and exercise. Classes are held for
members of the community at an additional charge.
Cardinal Weight Room
The Cardinal weight room was renovated in 2004 and its
machines are constantly being improved. The facility serves
all varsity squads as well as the campus population. It
features free weights as well as power lifting stations. The
department has a full-time strength coach to assist with and
develop workouts.
Training Room
Catholic University athletics has three full-time
athletic trainers that staff every practice and home event.
Varsity athletes can visit the training room at any point during
the day for various treatments. The training room is equipped
with three new taping tables, six new treatment tables, a pair of
whirlpools and an examination room. The trainers have the
capabilities to perform electronic stimulation, ultrasounds and
provide moist heat packs. They also assist in the
rehabilitation process.
Tennis Courts
CUA's tennis team competes on six tennis courts located
just behind the DuFour Center. In 2005, all six courts were
refurbished using a stone dust overlay system. The courts are
available to CUA athletes and students.
