A track phenomenon in the late '50s, Madison was one of the earliest black athletes to win fame for the Cardinals. A member of the track team for four years, he ran cross country for three years, consistently placing first or second on the 440-yard, one mile, and two mile relay teams. "Gentle" John was also a member of the fastest indoor mile relay team in school history, with a time of 3:25.4.
While running cross country, Madison broke the Gallaudet course record of 18:06 by more than a minute, setting it at 17:01.8. He placed first at the Mason-Dixon cross country championhsips in his senior year.
