Derby was the only person at Catholic in his time to earn a varsity letter in each sport offered, baseball, basketball, football, tennis and track. Derby played for the 1912-13 basketball team which earned South Atlantic champion honors by virtue of its 13-3 record, and is also believed to be the only amateur baseball player to hit a ball completely out of Washington's Griffith Stadium.
