Welcome to the AT Room Spotlight! The athletic training staff will be bringing you topics of interest for both sport and life. The first topic we have decided to cover is drug testing and the NCAA. There is a lot of misinformation regarding this topic, so we wanted you to know the facts and how you can get more information. Everyone has heard about the danger of concussion in athletics. While you are certainly aware of some of the signs and symptoms, we wanted you to have an idea of how we treat concussions here at CUA. Enjoy this latest installation of the spotlight, on a topic that is important to all of us!

What is a concussion? (10-3-11)

Most athletes know that staying hydrated during exercise or activity is important to perform at the highest level.  It is sometimes hard to determine, though, how much to drink, when to drink and even what to drink in order to stay at optimal hydration levels.   While there is not one method that works best for all, the general guidelines in this spotlight can help you determine when or if you are dehydrated and what you need to do in order to keep extreme dehydration at bay. 

Hydration and Sports (10-17-11)

Balance is the body’s ability to interpret and use information about your position in space. Through a complex system of environmental feedback, cues from the bottom of your feet, the relation of your inner ear to gravity, and what you see, your body senses which muscles to activate or deactivate to maintain your desired position. It does this when you stand, get up from a chair, or walk on the sidewalk. It also uses all of these cues when you're riding a bike, skiing, strength training at the gym, and standing on your tiptoes to grab something from a high shelf. When the information received is too complex to translate, the system gets overwhelmed and you lose your balance. But with practice and experience (i.e. balance training) you can master what once seemed like impossible tasks.
