5/5/2008

WASHINGTON - Accolades continue to come for the Catholic University baseball squad (26-13-1) as two student-athletes earn Landmark Conference Player of the Week honors.  Senior Joe Maca (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Saint Dominic) was named the Player of the Week while sophomore Michael Bzozowski (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) earned the Pitcher of the Week award.  The Cardinals won the Landmark Conference on Sunday after starting the three-day tournament at the third seed.

Maca provided offensive punch for the Cardinals in all three games. He hit .467 during the postseason, knocking out seven hits in 15 at-bats. He went 4-for-6 in a comeback win over Susquehanna, and added four RBI and three runs scored in that game. He added another two hits, two runs and two RBI in the clinching win over Scranton. Overall, Maca had six runs scored and six RBI over the three games, he also stole five bases.  Maca has already earned First Team All-Landmark honors this season.

Bzozowski made three key appearances for the Cardinals, this is his second pitcher of the week honor of the season. He tossed four innings of relief, earning a win and a save while allowing just one base runner. He went two innings to earn the win in a comeback win over Susquehanna and then had a one-inning save in a win over Juniata. He then tossed the final inning as CUA claimed the title with a win over Scranton. He struck out seven hitters over the four innings.  Bzozowski was named to the All-Landmark first team earlier in the week.

CUA is currently riding a ten-game win streak but will have to wait to see if they will be invited to postseason play.  The selections will be announced on May 11th
