CUA's win streak snapped by Bridgewater in road loss
BRIDGEWATER, Va. – CUA had a tough time against Bridgewater on Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Eagles 15-2. The Cardinals scored first, but their lead did not last long with Bridgewater scoring seven times in the second to take control. Following the loss CUA sits at 21-12 overall, while the Eagles improve to 26-12.
CUA struck first, scoring a single run in the first when Colin McCarthy singled home Tim Mierzwa for a 1-0 Cardinals lead.
The lead was short-lived however, with the Eagles scoring seven times in the second to open up a six-run advantage.
The big blows were a three-run homerun by Jonathan Mason and a two-run shot by Derrik Walling.
CUA scored its second run of the day in the fifth when McCarthy drove in Matt Grieb with a sac fly, but again the Eagles answered, this time with four runs in the bottom of the inning.
Mason went yard again, his second three-run shot of the afternoon, and Jay Thompson crossed home on a wild pitch.
Bridgewater put the game away with a four-run seventh, highlighted by Ryan Smith's three-run double to left.
CUA starter Kevin Farley was dealt the loss after he gave up seven runs on seven hits in 2.0 innings, while Colin Kelly, Robin Mowatt, Brian Cahill, and Thomas Travaglia also pitched.
Joseph Lucas went 5.0 innings to earn the win, allowing only two runs on four hits during that time.
Mierzwa and Wesley Stonelake led the CUA offense with two hits apiece, while Alex Nuttycombe went 3-for-4 with three runs scored for Bridgewater.
CUA remains on the road for its next game, traveling to Susquehanna on Saturday for a conference doubleheader. Start time is set for 1 p.m.
