Cardinals fall to unbeaten Manchester squad in S.C.
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – CUA dropped its second straight on Monday afternoon, falling to a very strong Manchester University squad 8-3. For the second straight day, the Cardinals (5-2) pulled to within a single run late in the game, but the Spartans (6-0) pushed three across in the top of the 9th to help seal the win.
Manchester's Bryce Murphy was the story of the afternoon, throwing a complete game, and allowing just one earned run. He struck out seven, while allowing seven hits.
The Spartans grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first when Jordan Niemann doubled in two runs, and the lead reached three when a single run crossed in the 3rd.
CUA got on the board for the first time in the bottom of the 3rd when Dan Hinchcliff scored on Marc Hanna's sacrifice fly.
Manchester came right back with another single run in the 4th, but the Cardinals pulled to within one with two runs in the bottom half.
Brendan Breslin reached on an error and moved down to second on the same play to get the frame started. With one out, Wes Stonelake delivered a RBI double, and Hinchcliff followed with a run-scoring single to make it 4-3.
The Spartans went up 5-3 when they scored once in the 6th, and they tacked on three more in the 9th to open up a five-run advantage.
CUA's Robin Mowatt had a good day on the hill, allowing only four earned runs in six innings of work. Jonah Jimenez and Chris Nee worked the final three frames in relief.
Pat DeToro and Hinchcliff finished with two hits apiece for the Cardinals, while Eric Scamardella totaled 11 putouts at first base.
On Tuesday, CUA faces York (Pa.) at noon.
