Cardinals drop conference opener to Moravian 5-3

WASHINGTON – CUA dropped its Landmark Conference opener to Moravian 5-3 on Friday afternoon. The Greyhounds scored three runs in the 2nd inning, and after the Cards pulled to within one, Moravian added a late insurance run to earn the win. Chris McCloud led the way offensively for CUA with three hits and a pair of RBIs.

The Greyhounds jumped on the board first when they pushed three runs across on five hits in the 2nd. Charles Savite brought home the first run with a single and then Mike Roethke delivered a two-run double to left center to make it 3-0.

CUA came right back with a single run in the bottom of the frame, as Nick Clary delivered a towering home run to left.

The back-and-forth continued with Moravian scoring once in the 3rd on Ryan Luke’s single to left, which plated Daniel Seitzinger and made it 4-1.

In the 6th, CUA pulled to within 4-3 with two runs. A pair of Moravian errors allowed the Cards to put runners on second and third, and McCloud then belted a two-run double to deep center to make it a one-run affair.

The Greyhounds were able to push one more run across in the 8th when Justin Pilchman ripped a double down the left field line to make it 5-3.

CUA had a chance in the 8th to pull closer, with Mike McFarland delivering a pinch hit single, and pinch runner Stefan Poggioli moving down to second on an attempted pick off. But Nick Scali grounded out to short to end the threat.

A one-out double by Pat DeToro gave CUA one final chance in the 9th, but Moravian retired the next two batters to end the game.

Chris Lansberry went seven innings on the mound for Moravian, and struck out four to earn the win, while Chris Soltys worked a scoreless 9th to pick up the save.

CUA starter Colin Kelly went 4.2 innings, striking out three and allowing four runs, before giving way to relievers Rob Steinkopf and Kory Smigocki.

On Saturday, CUA and Moravian will play a doubleheader at Talbot Field. Start time is set for noon.
