Van Gieson shines in 4-0 shutout of Ursinus
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Freshman Sean Van Gieson threw eight
innings of shutout baseball to help lead CUA to a 4-0 win over
Ursinus (2-3) on Thursday afternoon. Pat DeToro and Dan Hinchfliff
combined for five hits, four runs scored and a RBI as the Cardinals
(8-2) won their third straight.
Van Gieson was masterful all day on the mound, striking out five and allowing only three hits to earn his first collegiate win. Chris Nee worked a scoreless 9th to seal the win.
Ursinus’ AJ Wright was dealt the loss after surrendering three runs and two hits in seven innings.
CUA scored its first run in the 3rd inning when Hinchcliff came home on an error by Ursinus.
The lead reached three in the 5th, when DeToro tripled home Hinchcliff, and then came around on a wild pitch.
Hinccliff then scored his third run of the day in the 8th when Mark Kalokitis brought him home with a sacrifice fly to center.
After surrendering 22 runs in their first two games of this spring break trip, the Cardinals have now allowed only 11 in the last three contests.
The Cardinals finish up their time in South Carolina on Friday morning when CUA faces Wilkes at 9 a.m.
