Cardinals close out spring break trip with 10-5 win over Wilkes

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – CUA closed out its spring break trip with a 10-5 win over Wilkes on Friday morning, marking the Cardinals fourth straight victory. Pat DeToro led the way offensively, going 3 for 4 with four runs scored and three RBI, while Mark Kalokitis, Nick Clary and Nick Scali each finished with two hits apiece.

CUA once again jumped out to an early lead, scoring once in the bottom of the first when Kalokitis drove in DeToro with a ground out.

DeToro then singled home Scali in the 2nd to put the Cardinals on top by two.

Wilkes jumped in front with a five-run 5th, but CUA came right back with two runs of its own in the bottom half of the frame to pull within a run.

After Dan Hinchcliff led off with a triple, DeToro brought him home with a single to make it 5-3. Chris McCloud was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 5-4.

CUA pushed two more runs across in the 6th to regain the lead. A DeToro double brought home Hinchcliff, and DeToro scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-5 Cards.

The Cardinals then sealed the win with four runs in the 8th. A Wilkes error allowed the first two runs to score, and Kalokitis followed with a RBI double.

Scali completed the scoring with a RBI single to left, plating Kalokitis.

CUA starter Rob Steinkopf went 4.2 innings on the mound, allowing three runs on three hits, before Dustin Hanely threw 1.1 innings of relief.

Jonah Jimenez earned the win by throwing one scoreless inning, while Kory Smigocki and Will O'Leary both threw perfect innings of their own.

Eric Hauer suffered the loss for Wilkes, after he allowed seven runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings.

CUA returns to action on Monday afternoon when the Cardinals travel to Johns Hopkins for a 3:30 p.m. start.
