Cardinals Fall 9-5 to Washington College in Mid-Week Matchup
WASHINGTON – Despite two runs, two hits and an RBI from freshman Paul Burmester, the Cardinals could not break through the Shoremen's early second inning lead to halt Washington College's 9-5 win.
WC recorded a single run on the bottom of the first and three runs on the bottom of the second to take an early 4-0 lead. CUA answered back with three runs on the top of the fifth. Burmester singled to left field and forced a Shoreman field error to score Nick Clary. Brendan Breslin's single to left field sent Marc Hanna and Burmester home for a score of 4-3.
The Shormen extended the lead on their efforts in the bottom of the sixth and seventh with two runs and three runs, respectively.
Catholic ended the contest with single runs in the top of the seventh and the top of the eighth. With Burmester on base, Joe Kelly singled to the right side of the field to score the freshman. Burmester scored Wyatt Schmidt on a sacrifice fly to right field.
Colin Kelly recorded the loss, as he allowed four runs with one being earned, while tallying three strikeouts.
The Cards return to Landmark Conference action by heading to Moravian for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 22 and a single game on Sunday, March 23.
