WASHINGTON - In their Landmark Conference opener, The Catholic University of America baseball team took the Moravian College Greyhounds into extra innings where Daniel Hinchcliff bunted in John Palladino in the bottom of the 10thto walk-off with a CUA 4-3 win.
Jack Hennessy made his second pitching start of the season and threw 105 pitches and five strikeouts through seven innings. Joe Salzano came onto the mound close his fourth game of the year and earned the win, pitching three innings with three strikeouts.
The Cardinals struck first, scoring two runs in the second inning of the neck-and-neck match up against the Greyhounds. A sacrifice bunt from Hinchcliff put Eric Scamardella and Palladino on second and third base, respectively. Mike McFarland send a grounder toward the second basemen to score Pallandino and advance Scamardella. Brett Padula sent a line drive into center field to bring home Scamardella and take a 2-0 led before the end of the inning.
Moravian took their opportunity to go-ahead in the top of the fourth where they scored all three of their runs for the evening. The Greyhounds maintained their 3-2 lead until the bottom of the fifth when Scamardella fired a line drive into left field allowing Wyatt Schmidt come in for the tying run.
With both Landmark Conference teams at three runs and neither able to send another runner over home plate through ninth the Cardinals and Greyhounds headed into extra innings.
The game looked promising for the Greyhounds in the top of the ninth with two outs and the bases loaded, but Charles Savite grounded the ball right into the hands of Salzano who made the underhand toss to Scamardella on first base to head into the bottom of the 10th.
Palladino entered the batter's box first for the Cards in the 10th and hit a line drive single into left field and advanced to second on a fielding error. Scamardella made the sacrifice bunt to advance Palladino to third before Hinchcliff made the suicide squeeze play to end the game 4-3.
The Cardinals and Greyhounds continue their three-game series with a double header on Sunday, March 15 beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Nationals Youth Baseball Academy. The second game will begin 20 minutes following the conclusion of the first.
