WASHINGTON - Just one day after defeating the Washington College Shoremen, The Catholic University of America baseball team headed down the road to Gallaudet University for a 12-1 victory on Wednesday afternoon.
Six Cardinals saw time on the mound through the nine innings. Joseph Prego made the start and pitched three innings with two strikeouts followed by Christopher Hutton who threw one strikeout and earned the win for the afternoon. Sean Carroll took the rubber for one inning and Josh Martin threw for two, each notching two K's a piece. J.P. Boyle and Jack Hennessy closed out the game pitching the eighth and ninth innings, respectively.
The Cards earned three runs in the first and third innings, additionally earning four more in the fifth and closing out with two more in the eight to walk away with the 12-1 win.
Jake Crist cranked a triple to right center to drive in Eric Scamardella and Stefan Poggioli for the first two runs of the afternoon. Wyatt Schmidt followed with a single to bring home Crist for the three-run first inning.
Poggioli opened the third inning with a triple to right field and advanced home on a wild pitch to score the Cardinals fourth run of the event. Continuing the third inning, CUA's John Palladino sent an RBI single to the shortstop bringing home Crist followed by a Mike McFarland double to send Palladino over the plate.
Heading into the bottom of the fifth Crist sent a double into left field followed by a Schmidt single and Palladino walk to load the bases. McFarland launched his second double of the afternoon into right field to send home Schmidt and Palladino. Andrew Stewart followed with a single to left field bringing in Palladino and Dan Hinchcliff popped a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing home McFarland for CUA's 10th run of the game.
To round out the game Mike Iglesia hit a double to right field and came in to score on a single from Kevin Nader. Nader scored the Cardinal's 12th run of the game off a single from Danny O'Hagan before the eighth inning concluded.
In the 2015 season CUA baseball now holds an 11-2-1 overall record. The Cards will host the University of Scranton Royals in a Landmark Conference three game series beginning Saturday, March 28 at 5 p.m. at the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy. Games two and three will be played as a double header on Sunday, March 29th beginning at 11 a.m.
