Catholic Baseball Drops Conference Double Header

WASHINGTON - With a Saturday night win in game one of the three game conference series against the University of Scranton, The Catholic University of America baseball dropped both games of Sunday's double header (3-2, 5-0) brining their Landmark record to 5-4.

The Cardinals now sit at 12-4-1 on the 2015 season while the Royals advance to 5-8 overall and 4-2 in the Landmark.

David Gatley took the mound for CUA in game one of the Sunday showdown. Gatley threw for six innings and gave up four hits and four walks with just one strikeout to be charged with his second loss of the season. Joseph Salzano enter the games  in releif to pitch the final inning.

Scranton got on the board early in the top of the second with two runs and maintained a 2-0 lead over the next four innings. The Cards saw hope when they notched two of their own in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game.

With Brett Padula on first Eric Scamardella sent a line drive double into right field and Thien-Quoc Tran entered to pinch run for Scamardella. Jake Crist grounded out to the pitcher and earned an RBI bringing in Padula. Tran came home for the Cardinals second run of the afternoon when Anthony Ferlise ripped a double to left field before the end of the inning.

The Cards and Royals were tied at two going into the final inning. The CUA defense was unable to hold the tie and gave up one run, giving the Royals a 3-2 advantage at the end of the game.

In game two the Cardinals exhausted three pitchers. Karan Sinha started on the rubber, gave up three runs in four inning and was charged with the loss. Mark Duffy threw for two innings and Sean Carroll came in to close, giving up two runs in the seventh.

The Royals earned their first run of event in the top of the third inning. With a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth Patrick O'Dell sent a two-run homer over the left field fence to bring the Royals to a 3-0 lead. Scranton secured their 5-0 win with a two-RBI double in the seventh inning.

The Cardinals saw two hits in the conference shut out. Scamardella hit a single to left field in the bottom of the fourth and Paul Burmester popped a single in the sixth inning.

CUA will host Stevenson University Tuesday, March 31, at 3:30p.m. and Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday, April 1, at 3:30 p.m. before returning to conference play on Friday, April 3, at Robert J. Talbot Field at 3:30 p.m.
