WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America baseball team fell to D3Baseball.com's No. 10 ranked team, Randolph-Macon College, 10-3 on Wednesday afternoon at Robert J. Talbot Field.
The Cardinals gave up two unearned runs in the first inning after two fielding errors and two earned runs off a Yellow Jacket 2-RBI single to center field to start the game with a 4-0 deficit. The Cards earned one of their own in the bottom half of the inning when Jake Crist grounded out to the shortstop to score Wyatt Schmidt. CUA gave up four more in the top of the second allowing the RMC to a early 8-1 lead.
After back-to-back scoreless innings in the third and fourth, the Jackets struck again with two runs in the top of the fifth to advance the score to 10-1. Eric Scamardella answered for the Cardinal after reaching first on an Yellow Jacket fielding error to bring n Brett Padula for CUA's second run of the afternoon.
Catholic saw one additional run in the bottom of the eighth when Bo Williams singled to center field to score Alec Dolton, but the CUA rally attempt was too late and the RMC ended the game on top 10-3.
Catholic saw five pitchers on the hill throughout the nine inning event. Joseph Prego made his third start of the season and was charged with the loss after pitching one inning and giving up four earned runs. Sean Carroll took the mound for four innings throwing three strikeouts while Ian Moss and Mark Duffy each threw for one inning. Joe Salzano came in to close the game pitching the final two innings with one K.
The Cards will host Susquehanna in a Landmark Conference showdown on Friday, April 3, at 3:30 am. The three game series will continue Saturday, April 4 with a double header beginning at 12 p.m. at Robert J. Talbot Field
