Hinchliff Guides Cards to Victory Over St. Mary’s (Md.)

WASHINGTON - Dan Hinchcliff of The Catholic University of America baseball team led the Cardinals off with a solo homerun in their midweek game against St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday to guide the team to a 7-4 victory.

As the lead-off batter, Hinchcliff stepped to the plate and was dealt a full count before sending a rocket over the left field fence for a solo homer and a 1-0 Cardinal lead. Stefan Poggioli took four balls to reach first base. Jake Crist knocked a double into right center, scoring Poggioli for a Catholic 2-0 lead in the first inning.

The Cardinals notched another run in the fifth when Hinchcliff scored on a single from Crist, and secured their midweek win by scoring three additional runs in the sixth. Danny O'Hagan drove in an RBI with a single to right field, scoring Wyatt Schmitt. Brett Padula earned a base hit after driving a single to left field and proceeded to steal second while O'Hagan stole third. With runners in scoring positions Hinchcliff ripped a double down the left field line for his second and third RBI of the event.

The Seahawks earned runs in bottom of the third and sixth for a 6-2 Cardinals lead heading into the eighth inning. The Cards got one more on the board in the eighth with a single from Poggioli, scoring Hinchcliff. St. Mary's (Md.) looked to rally, scoring two more in the bottom of the inning and bringing the final score to 7-4, Catholic.

CUA's Sean Carroll earned the win, pitching the first five innings of the game and tossing two strikeouts. Josh Martin and Ian Moss each saw an inning on the mound while Jack Hennessy entered to strike out one batter. Mark Duffy retired the final runners of the eighth inning. Joseph Salzano pitched to three batters in the ninth inning and earned his seventh save in 2015.

The Cardinals will return to conference play with a three game series in Huntingdon, Pa., closing out Landmark play against Juniata. The Saturday, April 25, doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. and game three will take place on Sunday, April 26, at noon.
