WASHINGTON - After a 4-2 midseason win over Washington College on March 24th, The Catholic University of America baseball team hosted the Shoremen for another victory 2-1 at Robert J. Talbot Field on Tuesday afternoon.
The Cardinals gave up one run in the top of the first inning but answered the Shoremen in the bottom of the inning with a run from Dan Hinchcliff. With Hinchcliff on second base, Jake Crist dropped a single into right field and Hinchcliff beat the throw home to tie the game 1-1.
In the bottom of the fifth Hinchcliff reached second base on a Shoreman throwing error and then advanced to third base on a wild pitch. Stefan Poggioli lobbed a sacrifice fly into the center fielder's glove, giving Hinchcliff his second run of the event. The run put the Cards up 2-1.
The score remained 2-1 through the remainder of the nine-inning game and the Cardinals advanced to a 23-11-1 record on the season.
Sean Carroll started on the mound for Catholic and threw six innings with two strikeouts. Christopher Hutton entered as relief to pitch the seventh and eighth and Joseph Salzano threw the last three outs for his eighth save of the season.
CUA baseball rounds out their regular season with a nine-inning matchup against Marymount at Bishop O'Connell High School on Wednesday, April 29th before heading into the Landmark Conference post season. They will take on the University of Scranton in a best of three series beginning Saturday, May 2nd, at in Scranton, Pa.
