Six Members of CUA Baseball Earn All-Landmark Honors

Towson, Md. -  Six student-athletes of The Catholic University of America baseball team have garnered spots on the All-Conference list as they continue to prepare for the Landmark Conference Finals.

Catholic will compete against Moravian in this weekend's championship series, and the Cardinals landed two players on the first team. A second team selection in 2014, outfielder Stefan Poggioli moves into a First-Team slot after a season in which he maintains a .357 BA with four triples, three home runs and 10 steals. Reliever Joseph Salzano makes the First-Team after collecting a league-high eight saves. He has a 2.00 ERA with 27 strikeouts over 27 innings of work.

With an overall batting average of .357 Poggioli leads the Cardinals in runs scored (31), total bases (66), and stolen bases (210). He also tops the team's charts with the most home runs (3) and triples (4) in 2015 with an on base percentage of (.443). Poggioli has started and appeared in 35 of 38 games for Catholic this season and registered 71 put outs and 7 assists in the outfield for a fielding percentage of .987.

Salzano notched First-Team honors after his breakout sophomore campaign posting a 1.42 ERA in Landmark Conference play. He was named Pitcher of the Week on March 16, after earning two saves during the week and escaping a bases loaded situation in the 10th inning against Moravian allowing the Cardinals to come away with a walk-off 4-3 victory in the bottom of the frame. Salzano's ability to anchor down the back end of the Cardinal's bullpen was pivotal to CUA's 2015 success. 

Jake Crist who leads the Cardinals with a .366 batting average earned a spot on the All-Landmark Second-Team. In 93 at bats Crist sits second on the team in on base percentage (.416) and triples (2). Crist is tied for third for RBI's (21) and sits four for hits (34) and total bases (41).

Also gracing the Second-Team list is third baseman Wyatt Schmidt. Schmidt appeared in and started 38 of Catholic's 39 games. He registered 29 put outs with 11 assists. Offensively Schmidt leads the Cards with 46 hits and sacrifice bunts; he has reached a total of 54 bases and stolen 9 in the 2015 season.

Andrew Stewart tops the team for in-conference batting average (.386). He registered 13 conference starts at second base and recorded 17 putouts with 26 assists in-conference during the regular season. Steward notched five stolen bases in five attempts and graced the All-Landmark Second-Team list with his 2015 accomplishments.

Lastly, Catholic senior shortstop Dan Hinchcliff earned Second-Team honors after registering a team high 119 assists. With 37 starts and 38 appearances Hinchcliff also notched 55 putouts while fielding 16 double plays and finishing the regular season with a .972 fielding percentage. Offensively Hinchcliff batted .283 on the season while scoring 28 runs with 32 hits, five double, and one homerun. Hinchcliff tops the 2015 Cardinals with 27 RBI's.

The fourth seeded Catholic University will take on the second seeded Moravian College for the conference crown beginning with a nine inning game on Friday, May 8, at 3:30 p.m.
