St. Mary's Md. - An RBI-single from freshman Ryan Tracy of The Catholic University of America baseball team in the bottom of the ninth inning, lifted the Cardinals to an 8-7 victory over the Seahawks of St. Mary's College of Maryland on Sunday afternoon.
Senior John Palladino led off for the Cardinals, lobbing a double to right field, in his first at bat. Fellow senior Eric Scamardella stepped up to the plate in the two spot, scoring Palladino on a single to right field.
Next up, freshman Bailey Lewis got on the base with a single to right center, and junior Matt Hsiung reached to load the bases with two outs. Junior Brett Padula hit a single to center field, scoring Scamardella and Lewis, earning the Cards three runs in the opening inning.
The Seahawks came across the plate with four runs in the bottom of the inning, but Cardinals regained the lead in the top of the fourth. Scamardella hit a 2-RBI single to bring in Palladino and Tracy. Padula popped a sacrifice fly in the fifth to increase the CUA lead to 6-3.
SMCM battled back with three run additional runs, taking a 7-6 lead. Lewis drove in Palladino in the next inning to tie the game.
At the top of the ninth, Tracy stepped to the plate with runners on first and second. He cracked a single into center field to score Hsuing for Catholic's winning run.
Junior Joseph Salzano stepped to the rubber in the bottom of the ninth, retiring the first three batters for the CUA victory.
Junior Sean Carroll earned his second win of the weekend throwing 2.2 innings for the Cardinals. Freshman Mason Belcher started on the mound of the Cards, while senior Josh Martin pitched 4.1 innings and senior Ian Moss threw for 0.2.
