Cardinals Drop Series Opener, 14-4, to Blue Jays

Elizabethtown, Pa. - In the opening game of its Landmark Conference series against Elizabethtown College, The Catholic University of America baseball team fell 14-4.

Sophomore Jake Crist blasted a solo homer over the wall in the first inning to put the Cardinals on the board. The lead wouldn't hold as the Blue Jays scored two runs in the second, four in the third inning and one more in the fourth.

Catholic notched another run in the top of the sixth with and RBI-single form freshman Bailey Lewis but Elizabethtown continued its hitting streak bringing four more runners across the plate in teh bottom of the inning. In the seventh inning the Blue Jays secured their victory when junior Colby Smith hit a 3-run homer to bring the E-Town tally to 14 runs.

With one final opportunity in the top of the ninth, the Cardinals drove in two more runs. With two outs and runners in scoring positions senior Kevin Nader sent a 2-RBI single up the left side. The Blue Jays retired the final batter to claim a 14-4 conference victory.

Senior Joe Kelly started on the mound for the Cardinals. Sophomore Jack Hennessy came in for relieve and junior Christopher Hutton along with senior Jonah Jimenez each pitched an inning.

The Cardinals and Blue Jays continue the 3-game Landmark Conference series with a double header on Saturday, March 26, beginning at 12 p.m.
