Myrtle Beach, S.C. - Jon Mierzwa of The Catholic University of America baseball team threw 15 strikeouts as the Cardinals captured a 5-1 victory over Rutgers-Newark on Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals faced the Raiders in the final game of their 2017 spring break showcase. Catholic went 7-1 in during its Myrtle Beach trip to advance its overall record to 10-2.
Miezrwa recorded his third win of the season, facing 26 batters with a career-high 15 strikeouts in seven innings. Senior Mark Duffy relieved Mierzwa in the eighth inning and fellow senior Joseph Salzano threw for the ninth.
After a sacrifice fly from sophomore Ryan Tracy that scored junior Danny O'Hagan in the second inning, the Cards and Raiders each held one run. The teams remained at a standstill until Catholic produces a four-run seventh inning, for the win.
Junior Anthony Ferlise popped a sac-fly to bring in sophomore Bailey Lewis for the go-ahead run. With two outs on the board, O'Hagan hit a two-RBI double, driving in juniors Jake Crist and Brennan Cotter then scored on an error for Catholic's final run.
The Cardinals return home to host Randolph-Macon College on Tuesday, March 14 at 3 p.m.
