Catholic Baseball Tops Moravian to Claim Regular Season Title

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America baseball team claimed the 2017 Landmark Conference Regular Season Title with a 4-2 victory over Moravian College in its regular season finale on Sunday afternoon.

The Cardinals, who just missed the league tournament in 2016, came back to top the Landmark in 2017 with a 13-5 conference record while boasting an overall record of 27-12 to date.

Catholic and Moravian began the Sunday afternoon contest in the fifth inning with one Moravian run on the board after the game was started then halted due to weather on Saturday, March 18.

Trailing 1-0, the Cardinals gave up a second run in the top of the seventh. With the opportunity to host the conference tournament on the line, Catholic rallied in the bottom of the inning to secure the No.1 seed.

The tying runs came as junior Jack Hennessy ripped a double down the right field line to score freshman Cid Porter and junior Danny O'Hagan. Senior Paul Burmester scored the winning run on a balk from Moravian pitcher Rhett Jacoby before Hennessy came home to secure the victory on an RBI from sophomore Bailey Lewis.

Catholic sophomore Mason Belcher played the opening 4.1 innings in March, throwing five strikeouts. Fellow sophomore Jon Mierzwa took the mound for the final 4.2 innings and caught five Greyhounds swinging and another looking.

The Cardinals will host the 2017 Landmark Conference Tournament starting on Friday, May 12. No. 1 Catholic will host No. 4 Drew University at noon followed by No. 3 Elizabethtown vs. No. 2 Susquehanna at 3:30 p.m.
