Salisbury 11, Catholic 5

Feb. 28, 2002

SALISBURY, Md. - Catholic suffered its first loss in CAC play as Salisbury downed the Cardinals 11-5. Andrew Colanero hit a three-run homer, his second of the game, to left field to break a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the seventh for the Sea Gulls.

After Catholic tied it at 4-4 in the top of the seventh on a Terence O'Rourke (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) RBI sacrifice fly to score Billy Rue (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel), Colanero faced pitcher Doug Sherry (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) with runners on first and second. Sherry had come in in the third inning in relief of CUA starter Adam Weiss (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Farmingdale). Colanero was 5-for-5 at the plate with five RBI to lead Salisbury (5-1, 2-0 CAC).

Catholic made things interesting in the eighth as Baha Azimirad (Gaithersburg, Md./Watkins Mill) hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot to right, to make it an 8-5 game. Later that inning after successive walks and an error on a third strike wild pitch to load the bases with two outs, the Sea Gulls' Steve Frederick got junior Andrew Burns (Prince Frederick, Md./Calvert) looking on a called third strike to end the inning. Catholic would strand 12 runners on base compared to Salisbury's seven.

Justin Siller (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) led Catholic as the junior went 3-for-3 with an RBI single in the first inning. Azimirad and junior Eric Cortina (East Northport, N.Y./St. Anthony's) also had two hits apiece for Catholic (5-2, 2-1 CAC).

Sherry suffered his first loss of the season (1-1) as the junior went four innings in relief, surrendering four hits, four earned runs while walking three and striking out two.

Catholic embarks on its spring trip and will take on Widener in Cocoa, Fla., on Sunday, March 3.
