WASHINGTON - Catholic dropped the first game 8-6 to Felician but held on for a 5-3 win in the finale in doubleheader action at Robert J. Talbot Field on Thursday afternoon.
Catholic was unable to hold on to a 5-1 lead as the Golden Falcons put two runs on the board in the fifth and Felician's Kirk Johnson hit a pinch-hit two-run home run to highlight a four-run sixth inning. Doug Sherry (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) picked up the loss in relief of starter Pat Clark (Dunmore, Pa./ Dunmore).
For the Cardinals, junior Todd Michalak (Manlius, N.Y./Christian Bros. Acad.) was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI's and teammate Justin Siller (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) was 1-for-4 with a 2-run double in the first inning.
The second game saw Catholic again build a 5-1 lead but able to hold off the Golden Falcons. Junior Billy Rue (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) was 2-for-3 with an inside-the-park home run in the third. Starter Brandon Bowron (Fairfax Station, Va./W.T. Woodson) picked up his third win of the season. The senior went six innings, scattering seven hits, giving up just two runs (one earned), while walking one.
After a Jessie Gorman leadoff home run in the fifth, Felician gave it one last effort in the seventh as CUA reliever Bernard Dennis (Arlington, Va./Bishop O'Connell) found himself with the bases loaded with two outs. After walking in a run, Chris Tiedemann (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) came on to get the final out of the game.
Catholic improves to 16-9-1 on the year while Felician slips to 10-8. CUA resumes action on Tuesday, April 2, with a home date with crosstown foe Georgetown. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
