Catholic 3-9, Columbia Union 2-8

WASHINGTON - Catholic took a pair of games from visiting Columbia Union on Friday afternoon, 3-2 in the first and 9-8 in nine innings in the second at Robert J. Talbot Field on Senior Day.

Senior Brandon Bowron (Fairfax Station, Va./W.T. Woodson) hurled a complete game to pick up his fourth win as CUA built a 3-0 lead early on. RBI groundouts by juniors Justin Siller (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) and Billy Rue (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) helped the Cardinals score twice in the first inning.

Senior Brendan Walsh (Richboro, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) was 2-for-3 with and RBI single in the second.

In Game 2, Tim Webster's (Langhorne, Pa./ Notre Dame) bases loaded single drove in pinch runner Mike Pomfret (East Hampton, Conn./Xavier) in the bottom of the ninth to give Catholic (22-16-2) the extra inning victory.

Catholic could not hold a 7-1 lead as Columbia Union (14-21-1) scored seven runs in the sixth to take a 8-7 lead capped off by the Pioneers' Jonathan Peter's two-run homer to left.

Webster tied the game at 8-8 in the very next inning with his solo shot to left. The junior went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI and a run scored.

Sophomore Eric Cortina (East Northport, N.Y./St. Anthony's) pitched 3.2 innings in relief to pick up his first win of the season.

The Cardinals close out the 2002 season as they play at Villa Julie on April 27 at 6:30 p.m.
