York 11, Catholic 5

WASHINGTON - J. P. Gallo went 3-for-4 with two home runs to lead York College past Catholic, 11-5, Saturday afternoon in a Capital Athletic Conference game at Talbot Field. Gallo homered twice in an eight-run 8th inning to break take the lead for good.

Juniors Bernie Dennis and Dan Conway each had three hits as the Cardinals had their three-game win streak snapped.

Down 4-3 in the fifth, CUA tied the game as senior Andrew Burns scored off a fielder's choice from the bat of senior Justin Siller. Siller then gave Catholic a 5-4 lead in the seventh with his second double of the day to score Dennis. Siller finished 2-of-5 with a run scored.

But York exploded for eight runs in the eighth as Gallo started the rally with a lead-off home run to center off of starter Adam Weiss (2-1). Weiss went 7.1 innings, allowing 10 hits, giving six runs, five earned, while striking out four and walking one.

The Spartans (4-6, 0-1 CAC) then tacked on back-to-back home runs by Andy Puglisi and Justin Heller. After chasing out Weiss, senior Eric Cortina was roughed up as York managed to bat around to Gallo who hit his second home run towards left center field.

Catholic (8-3, 0-1 CAC) tried to rally in the ninth, by scoring once on a Tim Webster pinch-hit RBI single, but the threat was ended with the bases loaded and two outs as York reliever Brian Hartman struck out pinch-hitter Joe Verga.

The Cardinals return to action on Tuesday as they take on CAC foe Salisbury in Salisbury, Md. at 2:30 p.m.
