Catholic takes two from R.I.T.

WASHINGTON - Catholic took a pair from visiting Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday as the Cardinals won the first game, 5-3, and the second, 4-3.

Senior Todd Michalak had a pair of RBI singles in game 1, going 2-for-2 with a run scored and senior Doug Sherry went six innings in the game one victory. Sherry, now 2-0 on the season, scattered seven hits, allowing two runs (one earned) while striking out eight batters.

Junior Bernie Dennis came on in the ninth and picked up his first save of the season.

John Byrne was 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI for RIT.

In game 2, senior Justin Siller and freshman Joe Benedetti each had two hits and an RBI apiece. Senior Billy Rue was 1-for-3 with an RBI single in the third inning.

Pitcher Peter Doyle raised his record to a team-best 4-1 as the freshman went 5.1 innings, allowing just three runs and fanning two.

The Tigers (4-5) crossed one run in the sixth and looked to add more but reliever Eric Cortina was able to get out of a bases loaded jam. The senior went 1.1 innings to earn the save.

The two teams meet again tomorrow for a single game here at Talbot Field at noon.
