Catholic 14, Gallaudet 4

WASHINGTON - Freshmen Mike Schmidt and Pat Trunfio combined on a three-hitter as Catholic pulled away from Gallaudet, 14-4, in a Capital Athletic Conference game Tuesday afternoon at Talbot Field.

Schmidt went three innings and did not give up a hit while striking out three and walking seven. Trunfio relieved him in the fourth and fanned nine batters over five innings and surrendered two runs and three walks.

The Cardinals got off to a 3-0 lead in the first as Mike DiNicola drove in leadoff hitter Todd Michalak with an RBI double. DiNicola was driven home by the very next batter, senior Justin Siller, who cranked his third home run of the season to center field. Siller finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored and four RBI's and two walks.

Gallaudet (6-10, 0-8 CAC) pulled within 5-4 in the fourth as new pitcher Trunfio was met with an RBI triple by Brett Talley and an RBI double by Curtis Christopherson.

CUA answered with a run in the bottom of the inning on a Brian Michael RBI single down the left field line. Michael was 2-for-3 with two RBI's on the day.

From there Catholic (14-6, 3-3 CAC) added five runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a commanding lead.The game was called after eight innings.

The Cardinals will battle the sixth-ranked (ABCA) Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins here at Talbot Field tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
