YORK, PA. - York defeated Catholic, 12-3, in the opening game of the 2003 Capital Athletic Conference double-elimination tournament Tuesday afternoon. With the loss, the fourth-seeded Cardinals must play the top seeded Sea Gulls of Salisbury on Thursday.
York's Jeff Moore helped the cause going 4-for-5 with three driven in including a two-run double in the fifth.
The Spartans (19-11) raced out to a 6-0 lead after four innings as CUA starter Adam Weiss. The senior allowed nine runs on 13 hits in five innings of work.
Junior Dan Conway drove in freshman Joe Benedetti in the fifth with a double to put the Cardinals on the board.
Erik Nielsen (2-for-2) hit a leadoff home run in the second inning and added his second long ball, a two-run shot, in the fourth.
The Cardinals (20-13) would add two runs in the ninth on RBI singles from sophomore Joe Verga and freshman Kevin Conley.
YCP starter Dave Ellis went seven innings, surrendering just
four hits while walking three and fanning four.
