Apr 24, 2003

SALISBURY, MD. - Catholic's ninth-inning rally was one run short as Salisbury hung on to defeat the Cardinals, 5-4, eliminating CUA from the 2003 CAC Tournament. Catholic suffered a 12-3 loss to York on Tuesday, giving them two losses in the double elimination tournament.

Junior Dan Conway had two of CUA's four hits on the day while senior Todd Michalak and junior Bernie Dennis each had a RBI double apiece.

Down 5-3 going into the ninth, the Cardinals (20-14) were able to get within one as Michalak drove in Conway with a two-out double but left the tying run on base as the Sea Gulls were able to get a groundout to first to end the game.

Starter Doug Sherry went seven innings, allowing four runs on 12 hits while walking three and striking out two.

Salisbury (24-8-1) led 4-1 after the first inning and tacked on another run in the fourth on a Trey Cobb RBI single.

But the Cardinals got two runs back in the seventh as freshman Joe Benedetti scored from third on a wild pitch and sophomore John Schmidt scored off an error by Salisbury third baseman David Sutton.

Catholic returns to action on Monday as they travel to Dover, Del. to take on Wesley College at 3:30 p.m.
