GETTYSBURG, PA. - After scoring eight runs in the eighth to take an 8-7 lead, Catholic saw Gettysburg plate a run in the bottom of the eighth and one in the ninth as the Bullets handed the Cardinals a 9-8 defeat Tuesday afternoon.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth and runners on first and second, Brendan McDonald's fly ball to center was dropped allowing pinch runner Nathan Smith to score from second.
The Bullets (16-16-2) raced out to a 6-0 lead after two innings as Nathan Bashaw's three-run double highlighted a five-run second.
After tacking on runs in the fifth, the Cardinals (21-14) batted around in the eighth, scoring eight runs. Mark Soisson's RBI double started things off and later added an RBI single later in the inning, giving CUA its first lead of the game. The senior finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Senior Justin Siller broke out of a 0-for-14 slump, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and two walks and junior Bernie Dennis added two runs scored and two hits.
CUA starter Peter Doyle gave up six runs on 12 hits over five innings. Mark Werle (1-2) suffered the loss as the sophomore came on in the sixth and worked into the ninth.
Catholic hosts Columbia Union at Talbot Field this Friday at 3:30 p.m.
