Catholic 5, Villa Julie 2
Apr 4, 2003
WASHINGTON - Freshman pitcher Peter Doyle picked up his sixth win of the season and senior Mark Soisson was 3-for-4 as Catholic held on to defeat Villa Julie, 5-2, in a non-league tilt at Talbot Field Friday afternoon.
Doyle scattered seven hits over 8.2 innings while allowing one earned run and striking out three and Soisson added a double and a key eighth-inning RBI single.
The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead in the second as sophomore John Schmidt blooped a single into right field to score senior Tim Webster and freshman Kevin Conley.
But the Mustangs got one back in the third on pitcher Jason Bungori's RBI single.
After leading off the bottom of the third with a double, Soisson moved to third base and was brought home on Webster's sacrifice fly to make it a 3-1 CUA lead.
Villa Julie looked to cross a run in the fourth after a leadoff double by Lee Jamison. Two batters later, Jamison tried to score off a single to left by Matt Waltrop but was thrown out at home by left fielder Joe Verga.
Senior Todd Michalak made it a 4-1 game with his solo shot to left, his second on the season, in the bottom of the inning.
A sacrifice fly by Villa Julie (2-10) in the fifth plated one run and cut into the CUA lead at 4-2 before Soisson would add an insurance run in the eighth. With runners at second and third, his sharp hit through the right side gave Catholic a three-run cushion.
Doyle looked to finish the game in the ninth but found himself with two on and with one out. Reliever McClain Tini came on and the sophomore nailed down his first save of the season.
The Cardinals travel to Fredericksburg, Va. to take on Mary Washington in a key Capital Athletic Conference game tomorrow starting at 1 p.m.
