2/17/2007

ASHLAND, Va. - The Catholic University baseball squad split a doubleheader with the Randolph Macon Yellow Jackets on opening weekend of the 2007 season.  CUA dropped the first game 1-0 but came back to get the win in the second contest of the day 3-2.  The Cards move to 1-1 for the season while the Yellow Jackets drop to 1-2.

Joseph Devine (Medford Lakes, N.J./Shawnee) registered the first hit of the 2007 season getting to first in the top of the fourth.  In the fifth inning CUA had runners on second and third off of hits by Cory Hudson (Beltsville, Md./Gonzaga) and Pedro Rivera (Fort Hood, Texas/Paint Branch) but a put out by the short stop and a strikeout retired the side.  Hudson and Rivera combined for two hits again in the top of the seventh but once again two strikeouts ended at bat for CUA.  The Yellow Jackets scored in the bottom of the fourth allowing the runner across the plate after a batter was hit by the pitch and again in the sixth.

In the 2-0 loss, Hudson was 2-3 at the plate while Rivera was 2-4.  CUA had six hits and no errors while RMC had just two hits and one error.  Joseph Voiro (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) got the loss for CUA after four innings pitched and five K's.

In the second game CUA jumped out to a quick lead thanks to three big hits to start the game.  Leadoff Rivera had a single and advanced to second on an error by the Yellow Jacket pitcher.  Matthew Rosner (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) came up and brought Rivera in thanks to a double.  Joe Maca (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Saint Dominic) batted third and ripped a triple to right field to get Rosner across the plate.  Finally Robbie O'Brien (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) singled to make it 3-0 CUA.

The Cardinals couldn't get anything else going after their but first inning and RMC answered in the third with two runs of their own but CUA was able to hold on for the 3-2 win.  The Cards had five hits to the Yellow Jackets' six but no errors for the second game in a row.  Matthew Valerio (Hamilton, N.J./Notre Dame) got the win pitching three innings with one strikeout.

The Cards will play Villa Julie this Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.  Due to field improvements, the Cards will play their first few home games at an alternate site.  Please check http://www.cuacardinals.com/ next week for more information and directions.
