Cardinals Top Eagles in 13
Eighth inning forces extra play

3/28/2007

FREDERICKSBURG, Va.- The Catholic University baseball team, propelled by a seven-run eighth inning, hung around to beat the Mary Washington Eagles (10-6-1, 3-1 CAC) 11-9 in a thirteen-inning marathon.  Looking at a 9-2 deficit CUA put together a huge eighth to force extra innings and eventually get the win.  The Cards improve to 9-10 on the season and 2-2 in conference play with the victory.

The Eagles started out hot scoring six runs before CUA could even get on the board.  In the top of the seventh Patrick Quintana (Denver, Colo./Littleton) drove in two runs with a shot to left field.  Mary Washington scored three more in the bottom of the inning and time looked like it was running out for the Cards who trailed by seven.

The top of the eighth turned things around as CUA began with five straight hits.  The Cards methodically ran the bases bringing in one run at a time as the Eagles struggled defensively. Mary Washington tried to combat the rally with four different hurlers in the inning but the Cards couldn't be stopped and knotted it at nine with an inning and a half to play.

Neither team managed to score in the ninth forcing it into innings.  The drought continued until the top of the 13th when CUA once again staged a rally.  Robbie O'Brien (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) led off the inning with a home run putting CUA up 10-9.  Matthew Rosner (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) got on with a hit to the short stop in the next at bat and made his way around the bases thanks to a sacrifice bunt from Joe Devine (Medford Lakes, N.J./Shawnee), a wild pitch and a pass ball to bring him in.  Mary Washington had runners on in the bottom of the inning but the Cardinals defense held them making the final 11-9 after a four-hour battle.

Sean Earley (Pequannock, N.J./Pequannock Township) led CUA at the plate going 4-5, Quintana had three RBI in the contest.  Andrew Moldawer (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) started the game on the mound for CUA with four strikeouts and Billy Robbett (Springfield, Va./Bishop Iretan) got the win pitching the final two innings.  The Cards had 20 hits to Mary Washington's 14 for the game.  Despite the number of innings the teams combined for just three errors.

CUA will face the Eagles this Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
