CUA Drops Two to Scarlet Raptors
CAMDEN, N.J.- The Catholic University baseball squad (13-14) dropped a pair of games to the Rutgers-Camden Scarlet Raptors (12-13). The Cards fell 8-7 in twelve innings during the first game and 4-3 in the second.
Robbie O'Brien drove in the first run of the game as Joe Maca made his way around the bases. The Scarlet Raptors evened it up in the bottom of the inning due to a pass ball making the score 1-1. The third inning proved big for both teams. O'Brien came through once again with a two-run single but Rutgers Camden took the lead with three scores.
From that point on the Cards and Scarlet Raptors scored a run apiece as the innings continued. Bobby Picardo hit in Matthew Rosner in the fourth and Joe Devine had an RBI in the seventh before Patrick Quintana drove in a run in the ninth to put CUA up by one run. Unfortunately in the ninth Rutgers Camden came back to force extra innings tied at six each. Both teams crossed the plate in the tenth and as CUA was unable to go around the bases the Scarlet Raptors did in the twelfth to get the 8-7 win.
In the second game the Cards struggled to score while Rutgers Camden used the momentum from the first to take a quick lead. The Scarlet Raptors scored two early runs before four scoreless innings from both teams. Rutgers Camden scored one more before the top of the seventh when CUA finally got things going.
Joe Maca singled to right to bring in the first run. Pedro Rivera then hit a single to the opposite field allowing Maca and Cory Hudson to score and tie it up. However the Cardinal defense couldn't hold on allowing one run in the bottom of the seventh to give the Scarlet Raptors the 4-3 lead as time ran out.
Paul Yantosh had a good day going 2-4 at the plate, O'Brien was 3-7 with three RBI. Connor Miehm and Billy Robbett took the losses for the Cards on the mound.
CUA will be at Gallaudet on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
