Baseball Falls to Bridgewater, 11-3
WASHINGTON-- After taking an early 2-0 lead and a stellar pitching performance from Soph. Kevin Emmons (Garwood/Arthur L. Johnson), who finished with 0 earned runs on three hits through five innings, CUA fell 11-3 to Bridgewater College Thursday evening.
LJ Travaglia (Randolph/Randolph) opened the hits for CUA in the top of the first with a single, followed by Joe Devine (Medford Lakes/Shawnee) who knocked in both himself and Travaglia on a deep shot that found its way out of the park.
That two run lead was secured until the bottom of the fifth, when a fielder's choice and bunt left Bridgewater with men at first and second and two outs. A fielding error followed by a bases clearing double put the hosts up one after five.
Mike Goodman (Brookville/Sherwood) and Pat Quintana (Denver/Littleton) answered in the top of the sixth with back to back doubles to tie the game at four.
In the bottom of the frame Bridgewater would tally three straight walks to load the bases followed by a four RBI grandslam and the final lead of the game. The hosts added four more insurance runs, all unearned, in the final two innings, while blanking the Cardinals.
In the seven game slide, CUA has given up 80 runs, but only 51 of those were earned. However in the losses CUA has managed to score 50 runs (7.14 per game) and maintained a .306 batting average as a team. The biggest difference between CUA and its opponents in the last seven games have been extra base hits. CUA has managed only 18 extra base hits (three home runs), but has given up 25, including 12 round-trippers.
CUA will look to snap the slide and make a run at the Landmark Championship against Moravian this weekend in a three game series beginning at 12 p.m. Saturday at Robert J. Talbot Field. The game is part of the second annual "Spring Sports Festival" which will include a tailgate beginning at 11:30 a.m. for all CUA students. Moravian is currently sitting atop the Landmark standings, with a 10-2 conference record and is 17-12 overall.
