Baseball Sweeps Moravian with 9th Inning Heroics
WASHINGTON-- After a six run first inning, the CUA bats were held silent until the Cardinals rallied in the bottom of the ninth with three runs to earn a three-game sweep of Moravian. The sweep puts CUA into a tie for fourth place in the Landmark Conference.
Joe Devine (Medford Lakes/Shawnee) and Tim Mierzwa (Laurel/Reservoir) led the offensive attack combining for five hits. Troy Langway (Beltsville/St. Vincent Pallotti) added some boost to the offense today in the first inning finding the other side of the fence with bases loaded to give the Cardinals an early 6-1 lead.
Moravian chipped away with three in the third and two in the sixth to tie the game, before adding two more in the top of the seventh on back to back singles bookending a RBI groundout by Kevin O'Keefe.
Between the first and ninth innings, Moravian's Thomas Fenyak allowed six hits, but did not allow a runner safely past first base. Twice CUA was picked off and twice the Cardinals were caught stealing in the middle innings.
It wasn't until a one-out single to leftfield by Mierzwa followed by a single to center by Dimitri Deoudes (Darnestown/St. John's (DC)) that CUA managed to record a runner safe at second base. Tommy Little (Hyattsville/DeMatha) then walked to load the bases. A wild pitch advanced the runners and Joe Devine's sacrifice fly to deep left was enough to tie the game. Little advanced on the throw and set up a two-out man on third situation. A wild pitch that hit off the cather's helmet deflected to the backstop and was all the speedy Little would need to safely touch homeplate for the winning run.
CUA is now tied for fourth place in the Landmark Conference heading into the final weekend of conference play against Drew next weekend. Before the Cardinals can look ahead to Drew they will first battle Christopher Newport (at Robert J. Talbot field, Wednesday, 3:30 p.m.) and St. Mary's (at St. Mary's, Thursday, 3:30 p.m.).
