Baseball Advances to Second Consecutive Landmark Conference Finals
SELINSGROVE, Pa.-- After an 8-4 win over Moravian, CUA baseball is making a second consecutive trip to the Landmark Conference Finals and is in good position to defend its title.
CUA defeated host and No. 1 seeded Susquehanna yesterday to reach the semifinals and today beat No. 2 seeded Moravian to return to the Landmark Conferece Championship game at approximately 4:30 this evening.
No individual player for CUA jumps off the stat sheet, but rather the entire team, with timely hitting, and strong defense, came together for the 8-4 victory.
A six run second inning was all CUA would need as Pat Quintana (Denver/Littleton) led off with a walk and was moved over by the sacrifice bunt of LJ Travaglia (Randolph/Randolph). A hit and stolen base followed by a walk left the bases loaded with one out for Tim Mierzwa (Laurel/Reservoir). The freshman didn't dissapoint as he hit a single through the left side and turned the order over.
Tommy Little (Hyattsville/DeMatha) stepped to the plate, again with bases loaded, and hit a base clearing, three RBI triple to right center. Reaching on a fielder's choice was Cory Hudson (Beltsville/Gonzaga), who bunted with Little on third to score the Cardinals fifth and ultimately winning run. Hudson then stole second and advanced to third on an out. With Mike Goodman (Brookville/Sherwood) stealing second, Hudson seized the chance and swiped home for CUA's sixth run of the inning.
CUA added single tallies in the fifth and seventh, while Moravian added one in the fourth and seventh, and two in the fifth.
CUA will now await the results of the next game at Susquehanna which will pit Susquehanna and Moravian against eachother with the winner needed to beat CUA twice to claim the conference title. The title game will begin approximately 40 minutes after the conclusion of the prior game.
