Baseball Falls to USMMA 4-3, Will Play For Championship Sunday

4/2/09

SELINSGROVE, Pa.-- CUA fell to the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, Saturday, 4-3.  The Cardinals will now take on USMMA again tomorrow with the winner being crowned the 2009 Landmark Conference Champion.

The Cardinals trailed from the starting gate, giving up three runs on a home run in the first inning.  CUA chipped away at the lead with runs in the first, third and sixth, but came up short as the Cards managed only five hits in the game.

CUA sparked late in the game with Sean Earley (Pequannock/Pequannock Township) hitting a single with two outs in the ninth.  Early was then run for by Tommy Bowles (Davidsonville/Mount St, Joe) who stole second.  The Cardinal threat was stopped as Kevin Sweeney (Bethesda/St. Anselm's Abbey) flew out to center field.

CUA will return to action on Sunday, May 3rd at 10 a.m. as the Cardinals will again face USMMA in the Landmark Championship game.  With each team having one loss in the tournament this game will decide the 2009 champion.
