Baseball Wins 16-14 in Offensive Battle With St. Mary's
WASHINGTON-- Fifteen hits and sixteen runs proved enough as CUA baseball came out on top of a marathon game with St. Mary's, 16-14.
Cory Hudson (Beltsville/Gonzaga) led the offensive blitz by CUA going 4-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Every Cardinal in the lineup added at least one hit, with Bobby Picardo (Atlantic Highlands/Middletown South) and Tim Mierzwa (Laurel/Reservoir) joining Hudson in the multiple hit column.
CUA got on the board early scoring three unearned runs in the top of the first inning being made possible by a defensive error by St. Mary's. St. Mary's responded with two of their own in the bottom of the stanza as the offenses were just getting started.
CUA added runs in the second, fourth, fifth, and sixth, while St. Mary's added runs in the second fourth, seventh, and eighth leaving the score at 14 all after eight.
After the first two batters of the ninth for CUA recorded outs, Mierzwa stepped to the box and put down a bunt single. Dimitri Deoudes (Darnestown/St. John's (DC)) doubled, scoring Mierzwa, then Hudson matched Deoudes' double with one of his own, to give the Cardinals an insurance run.
Mike Bzozowski (Westhampton/Moorestown) entered in the 8th and shut down St. Mary's allowing only two hits, and marking a 1-2-3 inning to close out the ninth.
CUA will return to action as they look to keep its Landmark Conference tournament hopes alive as the Cardinals will battle Drew University at Robert J. Talbot field starting on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
