Baseball Sweeps Series Over Drew, Will Advance to Landmark Conference Tournament
WASHINGTON-- With the seniors being honored it was only appropriate that each that stepped to the plate tallied a hit as CUA completed the series sweep of Drew today, 11-4.
CUA started early as Tommy Little (Hyattsville/DeMatha) led off with a single to short, followed by Cory Hudson (Beltsville/Gonzaga) who reached on an error by the first baseman. Both scored in the inning as did Mike Goodman (Brookville/Sherwood) who had reached on a single to center.
The Cardinals led 3-1 after one, but added four more in the bottom of the second to secure the victory. Over the final seven innings of play CUA added four runs to extend the lead as Drew managed just three runs in the final seven innings.
CUA tallied 11 runs on 16 hits and four Drew errors. Winning pitcher Kevin Emmons (Garwood/Arthur L. Johnson) grabbed his first win of the season in only his second start. Emmons allowed only five hits through 5.1 innings and struck out two.
Goodman's RBI in the bottom of the first inning marked his 50th of the season and broke the single season RBI record at CUA. Goodman's record is now set at 51.
CUA will travel to Susquehanna to participate in the 2009 Landmark Conference Championship Tournament. A year ago the Cardinals entered the tournament a three seed and worked their way through the field to be crowned the inaugural Landmark Conference Champions. This year the Cards will enter the tournament the four seed.
