Baseball Opens Season on High, 24-0 Win over
WASHINGTON-- Traveling just down the road to Gallaudet University (0-1) CUA (1-0) put up a strong opening performance with a 24-0 win over the Bison.
Nineteen hits, twenty-four runs, and two errors. While the last of those three may hurt the Cardinals later in the season, a strong collective pitching effort combined with timely hitting and power at the plate led CUA to open the 2010 season with a statement. A shutout, three-hitter that saw 10 pitchers take the mound and 21 different players make at least one plate appearance.
The Cardinals opened the game with seven runs on five hits in the top of the first inning. Gallaudet entered the bottom of the first down, but with back-to-back one-out hits, the Bison looked poised to close the gap. Troy Langway's unassisted putout at third and a strike out by CUA starter Justin D'Allesandro stopped the threat.
CUA added four in the second, seven in the fourth, and six more over the final three innings. In the seven-run fourth Eamonn Burke took an outside pitch to opposite field for his first homerun of the season. It was also his first grand slam of the year.
CUA will return to action on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at 3 p.m., against Johns Hopkins at Talbot Field.
