Baseball Sweeps Drew in Landmark Opener
Catholic University opened Landmark Conference play with a doubleheader sweep of Drew University in Madison, N.J., on Saturday. The Cardinals (5-3, 2-0 Landmark) won game one, 2-1, in extra innings, and the nightcap, 5-2.
CUA took the first game when third baseman Troy Langway hit a sacrifice fly to score first baseman Dave Grear in the top of the eighth inning. Grear had led off with a single and advanced to third. Relief pitcher Mike Bzozowski pitched his second 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the eighth to pick up the victory. Starter Andrew Moldawer struck out nine and allowed just two hits and one earned run over six innings.
Freshman Stephen Rosone pitched a strong game for the Rangers (0-10, 0-2). The freshman only gave up three hits, struck out six and walked two.
In the second game, the Cards erupted for 10 hits and Jack Mahoney scattered four hits over six innings to notch the win. Mahoney didn't allow an earned run, walked three and fanned five. Left fielder Dmitri Deoudes and shortstop L.J. Travaglia each went 2-for-4, and Grear was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
CUA and Drew will finish its three-game series at Doc Young Field on Sunday at 11 a.m.
