Cardinals Rally for Doubleheader Sweep, Improve to 5-0 in Landmark Conference
WASHINGTON (March 27, 2010) -- Catholic University scored the game-winning run on an error in the eighth inning to rally past Juniata College, 5-4, at Robert J. Talbot Field in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Saturday.
The Cardinals (8-3, 5-0 Landmark) won the first game, 5-2. The Eagles fell to 3-14 (1-4).
CUA tied game one with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the contest into extra innings. Pinch hitter Dmitri Deoudes had the key blow, a two-run single to right field, to score Dan Sullivan and Tim Mierzwa.
The Cards won it when A.J. Ventura came home on an error by Juniata third baseman Thomas Eck. Ventura was running for designated hitter Eamon Burke (2-for-4), who singleD to right with two outs.
Justin D’Alessandro notched the win with 2 2/3 innings of relief. Starter Jack Mahoney struck out six batters in 5 1/3 innings, walked three and allowed six hits. All four runs he allowed were unearned.
Mierzwa went 3-for-3 and scored a pair of runs.
In the opening contest, CUA’s first three hitters – Deoudes, Tommy Little and Mark Kalokitis – each singled to power a three-run first inning.
That was all the run support Redbirds starter Andrew Moldawer (2-0) needed. The senior right hander pitched six innings, allowed two earned runs, six hits, one walk and fanned four. Mike Bzozowski struck out one and gave up a hit in the seventh to notch his first save.
