Cardinals Remain Perfect in Landmark Conference Play with 15-1 Rout of Juniata
WASHINGTON (March 28, 2010) -- Catholic University won its sixth consecutive game – all in Landmark Conference play – with a 15-1 victory over Juniata College at Robert J. Talbot Field on Sunday.
The Cardinals pushed their record to 9-3 (6-0 Landmark) and swept a conference rival for the second straight weekend. They also scored 15 runs in game three of their series sweep at Drew University last week.
CUA jumped all over Eagles’ starter John Love for six runs in the first two innings. Left fielder Dmitri Deoudes went 4-for-5, scored twice and had four RBIs. His two-run homer in the second inning made it 5-0. Deoudes paces the Cardinals in batting (.556) and RBIs (12).
First baseman Dave Grear launched his second home run of the year, a two-run shot to left center in the fourth, to give the Cards a 9-1 lead. Grear finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a pair of scores.
Ron Esposito hurled five innings to improve to 2-0 and lower his team-leading ERA to 1.38. The 6-foot-2, 170-pound junior surrendered eight hits, one earned run and struck out two. Four Cardinal pitchers combined to pitch the final four innings and allowed no runs, two hits and fanned seven.
Chase Dykstra, Johnny Martinez and Ian Thorne produced two hits each for Juniata (3-15, 1-5).
CUA plays at Gettysburg College on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
