Baseball Sweeps Messiah 5-0, 6-5
WASHINGTON-- Led by the bats of Eamonn Burke and Tommy Bowles, CUA (3-0) swept a doubleheader this afternoon at Gallaudet's field against Messiah College (0-2).
Andrew Moldower and Ron Esposito combined for a seven inning four hitter striking out five batters and holding the visitors off the scoreboard. The offensive efforts of the Cardinals, led by Burke who finished the day 3 for 4 with two walks, and an RBI.
The Cards jumped out early scoring two in the bottom of the first and then adding one in the third and two more in the fourth to take the 5-0 win in game one.
In game two the battle was a bit tougher as CUA fell behind 1-0 after the top of the second, but answered quickly with a five run trouncing in the bottom of the frame. It was then that the CUA pitching began to falter as Jack Mahoney went 4.1 innings giving up seven hits and three earned runs before giving way to Chris Nee who grabbed only one out for the Cards before forcing another pitching change. Billy Robbett worked out of the jam, holding the visitors to only one run in the frame, but in the top of the sixth he gave up two earned runs on three hits.
Mike Bzozowski earned his first win of the year, as he completed the final six outs on the mound for CUA. In the bottom of the seventh inning CUA was quickly down to its last out and facing extra innings when Eamonn Burke earned another walk, and then advanced to second on a single by Tommy Bowles. Both then advanced when Sean Earley walked a few pitches later. With two outs and bases loaded and passed ball allowed Burke to break for the plate and earn the 6-5 walk-off win for the Cards.
CUA returns to action on Sunday, March 7, 2010 against Stevenson. The games will again be played at Gallaudet's baseball field. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
