Cardinals Split Doubleheader, Improve to 10-1 in the Landmark Conference
(April 17. 2010) Catholic University split a doubleheader at Susquehanna University to improve to 10-1 in the Landmark Conference.
The Cardinals (17-8) took the opener at Bollinger Field in Selinsgrove, Pa., 8-0, before falling in the nightcap, 6-3.
Andrew Moldawer (4-1) threw a seven-inning shutout in game one, allowing four hits and three walks and striking out four. The Cardinals scored one run in the second and added four more in the third to seal the outcome.
CUA’s Dmitri Deoudes was 2-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs and Tommy Little went 2-for-5 with an RBI and stole three bases. Leadoff hitter Matt Grieb walked three times and scored twice. The Crusaders (13-15, 6-5 Landmark) committed seven errors.
Things were much better for Susquehanna in the second game. Keith Needham pitched a five-hitter, walked two and struck out four to improve to 4-3. Only one of the three runs he allowed was earned. He out-dueled Ron Esposito (4-1), whose first loss of the year came after he gave up eight hits, four earned runs and walked one vs. three strikeouts.
The Crusaders took a 4-1 lead in the third on Nick Ferlise’s three-run homer. Justin Portzline (2-for-3) was the only SU player with two hits. Little was the sole Cardinal to accomplish the feat, going 2-for-2 and scoring once.
