Eastern uses strong pitching performance to down Cardinals

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Leading 1-0 after five innings, CUA saw Eastern score eight runs in the final four innings to claim an 8-1 victory over the Cardinals (6-4) on Thursday.  Eastern's Nick Moeltner was outstanding on the hill for the Eagles (3-4), going all nine innings, striking out seven and allowing just the one run.

CUA took a 1-0 lead in the second when Marc Hanna came around on a Chris McCloud double.  That proved to be the final run for the Cardinals though.

Andrew Carroll was cruising for CUA through five innings, but he ran into trouble in the sixth when Eastern scored four runs on five hits to go on top by three.  Carroll finished the day after surrendering ten hits and four runs, while striking out four.

The Eagles added two runs in the eighth and another two in the ninth to earn their third win of the season.

Scott Renauro was Eastern's top hitter on Thursday, belting five hits in six at bats and also driving in a pair of runs.  Three other Eagles recorded two hits on the day.

For CUA, Tim Mierzwa, Dave Grear, McCloud and Marc Kalokitis registered hits.  In addition to Carroll, Jack Mahoney, Robin Mowatt and Nick Perotta saw time on the mound.

CUA closes out its spring break trip with a 9 a.m. matchup vs. Swarthmore on Friday morning.  The Cardinals fell to the Garnet earlier this week 10-8.
