Conference champs rewarded for recent play by conference

WASHINGTON – After capturing its third Landmark Conference championship on Monday, the CUA baseball team was rewarded on Tuesday when Marc Hanna and Ron Esposito were named the Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.  Hanna hit .467 in the Cardinals three games in the conference tournament, while Esposito won his only start, which came vs. Moravian.

Hanna went 7 for 15 at the dish last week with one double, four RBI, three runs scored, a .533 slugging percentage and a .467 on base percentage.  He went 2 for 5 with a run and an RBI in the Cardinals tournament opening win over Scranton, backed that up by going 2 for 5 in the win over Moravian and closed out the tournament with a 3 for 5 performance, including three runs batted in, in the championship game.

For the season Hanna is batting .323 with 42 hits, 22 runs scored, 27 RBI and a .910 fielding percentage.  He has also appeared in 14 games as a relief pitcher, totaling a team-high five saves during that time.

Esposito made the most of his one appearance last week, going 6.1 innings with only two runs allowed in CUA's 8-6 win over Moravian on Sunday.  The win was Esposito's seventh of the year and advanced CUA into the championship round.

The senior hurler has been the leader of the Cardinals pitching staff this season, with a 3.07 ERA and 41 strike outs in 67.1 innings.  He's allowed only 23 earned runs and walked just 13 batters during that time.

Monday was CUA's third Landmark title in the last four years and with it the Cardinals advance to their first NCAA Tournament since 1977.  It will be CUA's first-ever appearance in the Division III Tournament; the school was a Division I member in 1977.

CUA will now wait to see where it is sent for the NCAA Tournament, with the announcement coming on Sunday, May 15 on NCAA.com.
