CUA blanks Penn State-Berks 9-0 in Myrtle Beach
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The CUA baseball team recorded its second win during its annual spring break trip on Monday by blanking Penn State-Berks 9-0. Matt Grieb smashed a grand slam in the fourth inning and finished with three hits on the day, while Robin Mowatt improved to 2-0 this season with seven shutout innings on the mound.
CUA jumped all over the Nittany Lions right from the start scoring twice in the top of the first inning. Grieb walked and advanced to third on a Tim Mierzwa single. Dave Grear then drove Grieb home with a single, bringing up Marc Hanna to the plate.
Hanna singled as did the next hitter, Chris McCloud, which plated Grear and gave the Cardinals an early two-run advantage.
The Cardinals added a single run in the third when Mierzwa led off with a single and moved into scoring position by stealing second. Following a Grear groundout Hanna singled home Mierzwa and CUA was in front 3-0.
In the top of the fourth CUA all but sealed this one by getting four runs on Grieb's long ball. Dan Sullivan led off with a double and Kory Smigocki followed with a single. Beriah Smith was then walked, bringing up the Cardinals centerfielder, Grieb. The CUA junior delivered a bases clearing home run and the Cardinals were on top 7-0.
The Cardinals added single runs in the sixth and eighth and Mowatt did the rest to lift CUA to its first shutout win in 2011. The Cardinals hurler struck out three and scattered four hits over seven innings before giving way to Nick Perrotta who worked a pair of scoreless innings in relief.
Kyle Hartman suffered the loss for Penn State-Berks after giving up seven runs on 11 hits in five innings of work.
CUA continues action from South Carolina on Tuesday when the Cardinals take on Wesley. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
